Improving your position.
Representing you is an honour and a privilege. It engenders a special trust. Your physical, emotional and financial well-being could be in jeopardy. As such, I give you my full attention, expertise, understanding and compassion. Most legal problems demand difficult and timely decisions. I guide you to those that serve you best, provide you with superior representation and help you find the most satisfactory and cost-effective resolution available in the circumstances. I make every effort to avoid unproductive legal battles, but when the courtroom is necessary, I make it work for you.
I have represented clients before the Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Justice and various administrative tribunals for more than 15 years. I know the legal system. Trial is a blunt instrument and a last resort. When reason does not prevail, trial offers a solution, but only after alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation and arbitration have been fully exhausted. ADR is generally better for settling disagreements because it provides you with more certainty at a lesser cost. Furthermore, in some cases it is mandatory. As such, I act as ADR counsel wherever possible. I can resolve your dispute creatively, holistically and effectively. Whether you need to persevere to trial or settle beforehand, you get optimal results. With good faith, reason, experience and insight, your dispute can settle at any point in the process. In appropriate cases I can also provide impartial mediation and dispute resolution services to both sides of a dispute.
My legal practice is devoted mostly to family law, civil litigation and criminal law. I completed my articles of clerkship with a reputable litigation firm in downtown Toronto. I received my Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Ottawa, where I was Senior Editor of the Law Review and Division Leader of the Community Legal Clinic. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Modern Languages and Literatures from Trent University while also studying for a summer at the University of Laval in Quebec, a year at the University of Granada in Spain and a year at the University of Nantes in France.
I am committed to public service and access to justice. I am on the Legal Aid Ontario family per diem duty counsel panel and the criminal and family panels. I am also a member of JusticeNet. I play an active role in the legal profession and have chaired programs for the Ontario Bar Association.
I enjoy serving a diverse community and I bring a broad range of experience to the practice of law. I am fluent in English, French and Spanish. I have taught ESL in Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Korea; volunteered at Na-Bolom in Chiapas, Mexico; lived on the tundra with the Inuit in Nunavut; participated in the Canada World Youth Quebec/Rwanda exchange; planted more than 250,000 trees; and completed many mindfulness meditation retreats -- most notably the Plum Village rains retreat with the venerable monk and Zen master Thich Nhat Han. Insight and experience are often more useful for developing creative solutions to legal problems than legal training is!
I can help you. I invite you to my office for a free, private and confidential consultation. I have many years experience helping people resolve their most personal legal issues. Benefit from expert and principled advice. I can find an easy, inexpensive solution to your problem. If you need a more detailed process, I flesh out the legally important facts and plan the best course of action. My rates are reasonable and I offer unbundled services too. There may be many options available. I find the right one for you. I understand the anxiety and uncertainty you feel. You might be enduring one of the most difficult periods of your life. The legal system too frequently compounds problems rahter than solving them. Don't panic. Remain calm, solid, focused, and relaxed. I can manage your legal issues to a higher standard than the ethical and professional requirements of the Bar.
